Lavanna Frey

Lavanna Jean Frey, daughter of C. “Albert” and Emma F. (Goeken) Knipp, was born February 22, 1929, at her parents’ residence in Keystone, IA. Lavanna was dedicated to the Lord by her parents according to their Lutheran faith, expressed through the Sacrament of Baptism on March 7, 1929, by Rev. A.W. Brauer. Her sponsors were Mrs. Charles (Emma) Knipp and Mrs. William (Elva) Thede. We believe she went to country school and then was educated at Keystone Lutheran School probably until 7th and 8th grade. When 13, she was confirmed as a proclamation of faith according to Lutheran tradition on March 29, 1942, by Rev. A.W. Brauer at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Lavanna was a graduate of the Keystone High School in 1946 and then graduated with a degree in cosmetology from Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids in 1947.

At Paris Beauty Academy, Lavanna met Martin Jasper Frey, a classmate. After dating, they were united in marriage on February 28, 1947, by the Rev. A. W. Brauer at Trinity Lutheran Church of Cedar Rapids, IA. They became the parents of six children: Roxanne, Monica (Moni), Jolayn (JoDi), Jacqueline (Jaci), Michelle (Mici), and Martin II (Marty II).

In the 50’s Martin and Lavanna owned and operated Frey’s Beauty Salon and farmed in Keystone, IA. In 1960’s when Lavanna wasn’t busy with her children, she also worked at Humphrey Dairy. In the 70’s Lavanna owned & operated several businesses including Lilac Styles & Bouquets, Lilac Styles, Melting Point Christian Book Store, and Frey’s Nu Look. Since the early 80’s Martin and Lavanna owned and operated Frey’s Amusements, New Orleans, LA. Their carnival played at fairs and celebrations in IA, MN, NE & LA.

Martin and Lavanna were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Keystone, IA, in their early years. Then, after moving to West Union, they became members of Zion Lutheran Church of West Union. They invested significantly in supporting the hopeful birthing of an Assemblies of God Church in West Union and later the founding of Victory Foursquare Church in West Union. As of recent, Lavanna became a member of Harvest Baptist Church in Fort Dodge, IA. Although we remember many Pastors & Evangelists in their home through the years, it is the Pastor of Harvest Baptist Church, Rev. Marvin Smith, who regularly visited Lavanna in Mici’s home and then at Crestview Nursing Home.

Her children all remember unique & wonderful times of confession and rededication of faith in the Lord Jesus (e.g., Lutheran sacraments, teaching Sunday School, times of devotions, special moments of prayer, long-term support of pioneer work, etc.). We all agree that Lavanna held to a living faith in the Lord Jesus. We know that she prayed regularly for her 5 children, 13 grandchildren & 31 great-grandchildren.

Of course, Lavanna, as an only child, didn’t have her own brothers and sisters; so, we are so very thankful to the Frey family and their love and care of Lavanna through all of the years. There are so many cherished memories of love and laughter as the families visited and celebrated life with Lavanna and Martin through the years.

On March 20, 2019, Lavanna died at Crestview Nursing Home, Webster City, IA, at the age of 90 years and 26 days.

Her infant daughter Roxanne Kay, her parents C. Albert & Emma Knipp, and her husband Martin preceded her in death.

Survivors include four daughters, a son, and their spouses: Moni & Ernie Guyer, Lindale, TX; JoDi & Larry Christofferson, Rapid City, SD; Jaci & Tom Mann, Kiowa, CO; Mici & John Holstein, Fort Dodge, IA; and Marty & Kathy Frey, Olympia, WA.  Grandchildren are: Dawn & Kevin (Trigueiro) Guyer; Todd & Laura McCollough, Laura Lynn & Andy (Boettger), Tim & Christy McCollough; Thea & Doug (Wood), Mandy & Ronnie (Brammer), Misty Mann, and Tessa Mann; Evie & Caleb (Hedeen), Amy & Matt (Pottorff), and Mary & Robert (Martin) Holstein; and Sarah & Kyle (Ulrey) and Joshua Martin III Frey. Beverly Hinsenbrock

Beverly M. Hinsenbrock, 83, of Clermont, Iowa died Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at her home surrounded by family.  She was born June 6, 1935 at home in Greeley Iowa.  Beverly grew up in Greeley and Guttenberg.  Her love of horses began early when she lived in Greeley and would go down the road and beg rides on the draft horses from the Hoberts, who had a large draft horse operation. Beverly passed on her love of horses to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom are active in rodeoing and riding horses.  Beverly was also active in sports and played basketball at Guttenberg High School.  She was the start of four generations of her daughter, granddaughters, and great-granddaughter playing girls’ basketball.

Beverly’s love of dogs was well-known and she had many loving and faithful dogs in her lifetime.  When someone was experiencing difficulties, her answer was always, “They need to get a dog”.  If they already had a dog she would add, “Well, they need to get another dog.”  After all Beverly’s philosophy was that dogs were like potato chips – You could never have just one.

Beverly was united in marriage with Richard Hinsenbrock in 1955.  Two daughters were born to this union, Vicky and Kim. When they were first married, they lived in Guttenberg and then moved to a small farm outside West Union. In March of 1967, they purchased their farm at Clermont and lived there the rest of their lives.   At one time they raised sheep, beef cattle, pigs and milked cows plus had a few horses.  Although Beverly was not raised on a farm, she was a very hard worker and partnered with her husband as they farmed successfully through the years.

Beverly enjoyed riding horses all her life.  After the girls graduated, Beverly began showing again.  She had a very successful show career with her horse DeeDee, showing in halter and pleasure at NEISCA shows.  Beverly also raised and showed futurity colts and won numerous awards at the Tri-State Futurity.  In later years, she rode trail rides.  She was a longtime member of the Volga River Riders and was very active in the saddle club.  For probably the last twenty years, Beverly would say she had to ride as much as possible because she couldn’t guarantee she could ride again the next year.  This is that next year, her last ride was in 2018.

Beverly is survived by her children, Vicky Hinsenbrock of Decorah, Iowa and Kimberly (Mark) Schrandt of Cashton, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Kelly (fiancé, Neil Honish) Lehnherr, Tomah, Wisconsin, Kara (Jacob) Cina, Viroqua, Wisconsin and Stacy (Jay) Kraabel, Cashton, Wisconsin; great grandchildren, Brooke and Brady Lehnherr, Jasper and Emmitt Cina, Cord, Cannon, and Baby Girl Kraabel; siblings, Sandy (Jack) Mather of Edgewood, Iowa and Chris Lancour of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and also her beloved canine companions: Tara, Freckles, and Izzy.

Beverly was preceded in death by her parents & step-parents, Moxie and Louise Rademacker and Lowell and Gertrude Smock, her husband, Richard Hinsenbrock (4/16/2009) and two brothers, Duane “Bud” Smock and Don Smock.

Beverly’s family would like to thank Lance Hangartner and Joyce Schott for their kindness and support.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be held from 4-7 pm on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Schutte-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Clermont, Iowa with a short service to follow.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Palmer Lutheran Hospice and Gilbertson Conservation Recreation Area.

Honorary pallbearers are Lance Hangartner, Bill Crandall, Roy Murphy, Mike Whittle, Robert Swenson, Mark Schrandt, Jacob Cina, Jay Kraabel and Neil Honish.

He met the love of his life, Geneva Huinker, at a wedding dance at the Inwood in Spillville.  They were married on May 23, 1949 at Our Lady of Seven Dolors in Festina, Iowa.  Clarence and Geneva were going to celebrate 70 years of marriage next month.   From this marriage they had thirteen children, 29 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

Clarence and Geneva started farming near St. Lucas and they moved to their home place near Festina in 1958.  He loved farming.  His favorite job on the farm was picking corn.  Clarence loved polka music, watching the Chicago Cubs and playing cards.  He was a life time member of St. Luke’s Catholic Church, the National Catholic Society of Foresters, and he also served on the Board at the Farmer’s Co-op. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.  Clarence and Geneva retired to St. Lucas in 1996, but he never lost his love for the farm and frequently went to the farm to help.  What we will miss most about dad, grandpa, was his incredible ability to remember everything.  If ever we had a question about history, family, St. Lucas, he would know the answer up to the day he died.
