Lillian Hansel

Lillian A. “Lil” Hansel, 93, of West Union, Iowa died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019 at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union, Iowa.

Lil was born August 17, 1925 to Albert and Anna Bertina (Anderson) Halverson near Postville, Iowa.  She became a child of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on September 13, 1925 at the West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, Iowa. On May 5, 1940 she was confirmed at this same church.  Lil attended school in Clermont and graduated from Clermont High School in 1943.  She married George “Mick” Schroyer on April 18, 1946 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.  They lived in West Union about five years before Mick took a new job working road construction. For the next five years they moved to different towns in Iowa before moving back to West Union.  During this period Lil and Mick were blessed with two children, Michael and Debra. After their return the family joined Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union.  Lil started working at the West Union School in Food Service as a cook.  After Mick’s death in 1977, Lil continued working and married Squire Hansel of Wadena, Iowa in January of 1981.  Lil continued working in the school system while Squire farmed and raced quarter horses.  After Squire passed away in 1988, Lil continued working.  She finally retired from the school in 2001 after forty-one years of service.

Lil was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Palmer Lutheran Auxiliary.  She was very involved with her two children, three grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.  She played cards with a very special group of six ladies. In addition, these ladies would participate in a little gambling at different places, usually around one of their birthdays.  The group would walk at the West Union Rec Center in the summer and would walk the halls of the school in the winter. After their walk they would “have” to go for coffee and talking, usually at Hardees.  Lil preferred doing things herself but, every now and then would accept help with the understanding that “I am still the Boss”. This attitude was apparent even in her last few days at the hospital.  The family has written proof.

Those left behind to cherish her memories are her son, Mike of West Union, Iowa; grandchildren. Michelle (Barry) Armstrong of Guttenburg, Iowa; Chad Schroyer of Garnavillo, Iowa; and Janell (Matt) McElree of West Union, Iowa; ten great grandchildren, Antonio Armstrong of Dubuque, Iowa; Dakota Schroyer of McGregor, Iowa; Ke’Andre Armstrong of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Erica Armstrong of Fayette, Iowa; Cayden, Ashton, and Bryson Schroyer of Garnavillo, Iowa; Peyton and Maxwell McElree of West Union, Iowa; and Trevor Harbaugh of Garnavillo, Iowa; son-in-law, John Dessel of West Union, Iowa; brother, Louis (Darlene) Halverson of Stoughton, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Mary Schroyer of West Union, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lil was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Mick Schroyer and Squire Hansel; her daughter, Debra Dessel, on March 31, 2018; her daughter-in-law, Sharon Schroyer, on March 26, 2013; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Francis and Robert Bemiss, and Irene and Alvin Ruroden; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, DeVere and Norma Halverson, and Harold and Gladys Halverson.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019 at Bethel Presbyterian Church in West Union, Iowa with Rev. Don Best as the officiant.

Visitation was held 4:30 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019 at Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home in West Union, Iowa.

Internment was held in the West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.

Margaret (Crider) Keith, 96, died on December 21 at home in La Grande, Oregon, surrounded by her family.  A funeral service was held on December 28 at Trinity Baptist Church in La Grande.

She was born on June 2, 1922 in Elgin, Iowa, the eldest of four children to Ray and Frieda Crider.

From early on, Margaret was interested in medicine - it started an early age as she rode along with her father, veterinarian "Doc Crider," as he took her along on calls in the country. She enthusiastically took it all in, and it inspired her interest in the science of medicine. After she graduated from high school, Margaret entered nurses training at St. Luke's College in Cedar Rapids. graduating in 1943.  At this time, World War II was on, so she volunteered for duty. She was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the Army and assigned to Tinker Air Force Base in Tinker, Oklahoma. There she primarily trained medics for overseas combat. This time in her life left an indelible mark on her, and the lives of all of us who got to hear the amazing stories from the service, pieces of history in medical treatments, and what it was like to be a nurse in war time. It was a fulfilling time in her life and had a very happy ever after – Byron Keith. He was her patient, and it was love at first sight…. As he used to say, “I knew at first glance I was going to marry “blue eyes.” And he did – on January 6, 1945. He passed in 2011, but what a wonderful 66 years they had together. His job required frequent moves over the years, but upon his retirement, they settled in Las Vegas.  Throughout the earlier years, she continued her nursing career in various capacities - as a school nurse, work in physicians' offices, as director of admitting for a large hospital in the Sacramento, CA., area, and as a convalescent hospital administrator in the same area.

While Margaret lived and traveled far from Elgin, her life story all began here. It was always her heartland. And it still remains a cherished place filled with memories for the whole Crider family. For many years, the “Crider Clan” would journey from parts afar to be together at Homecoming and enjoy the beloved farm community.  Margaret, her sister Barbara and twin brothers Keith and Ken and their families have spent many happy times here.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and David Lyon of La Grande; sister Barbara McCully, Burnsville, MN; Brother Keith Crider, Westford, MA; ; grandchildren Michael Nicely of La Grande, OR, Kevin Lyon of Medical Springs, OR, and David Lyon II of La Grande, OR; great grandchildren Elizabeth, William Lyon and Wren Lyon;  nieces Lisa Smith, Grapevine, TX, Ann McCully, Minneapolis, MN,  Kristin Murphy, Groton MA;  Jennifer Ditscheit, Melbourne, FL, Karen Lougee-Martin, Colchester, VT, and nephew Jeff Crider, Scottsdale, AZ.

This is a tribute to honor the life of our dear Margaret. This is also a loving celebration of Elgin. We know Margaret proudly called the Little Switzerland of Iowa her roots. We do too.  We miss her dearly, but celebrate her life well lived.

Memorials may be made to the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary or the City of Hope.

Gene Klinge

Bring your best memories and stories to share as the family of Gene Klinge celebrates his life on Jan. 26 at 1:30 p.m. in a place very special to him, the gymnasium which bears his name at West Central Community School in Maynard, Iowa. The family is looking forward to visiting with everyone prior to the service from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

In spirit of the occasion, the family requests those attending wear their favorite school apparel, be it Blue Devil blue, Indian orange, Hawkeye black and gold or even Minnesota Viking purple or camouflage would be appropriate. If you’d rather, feel free to wear his signature red or orange socks in his honor.

As an expression of remembrance, a memorial fund has been set up in Gene’s name. The family hopes to establish an annual scholarship in his memory to award to Iowa basketball girls in their post-secondary education. Please mail memorials to Waukon State Bank at 22 West Main Street, Waukon, IA 52172.

Gene Klinge was born Jan. 10, 1937 to Kermit and Ethel Klinge in rural McGregor, Iowa. His brother Jim joined the family in March of 1939. Gene married Patricia Wilson on June 5, 1964 in Elgin, Iowa and the two of them had four children: Kathy (Jon) Ehlers, Vicki (Mike) Born, Kevin Klinge and Karen Klinge.

Gene’s love for the Mississippi River began when his dad and a friend secured a one-room cabin a mile south of Harpers Ferry when he was young. It is here where he honed his fishing skills (and stories) that ran parallel with his love of hunting. An avid outdoorsman, Gene spent countless hours with his loyal dogs hunting ducks, geese, pheasants, quail, deer, squirrels, rabbits and mushrooms. He continued to fish until late in life, constantly hounding those poor walleyes in the muddy Mississip and taking countless trips to the Canadian waters with his crew of friends.

Gene attended Luther College for one year after graduating from Monona HS in 1955. A bad car accident changed his life course and following a long recovery, he eventually graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1962 with a BS in education. Gene was hired right out of school eight miles down the road at West Central as a biology and PE teacher and assistant football coach. In another turn of events, the previous girls basketball coach resigned two weeks before school started, so the rookie was asked if he’d take on that job as well.

Gene ended up liking the gig (girls listened better than boys he discovered) and coached girls basketball for 41 years at West Central, winning an astounding average of 20 games per year. He led the Blue Devilettes to 12 state tourney appearances, including a third-place finish in 1972. He served as AD at West Central for 30-plus years and stock-piled a number of comical stories from teaching drivers ed during the summer months.

Upon retiring to that same sweet spot along the banks of the Mississippi river, he was subsequently asked about coaching the Waukon girls team. He decided it would be a good activity to occupy his winters and took over that program from 2003-14.  He would eventually realize his dream of winning a state title in 2004 and take three additional teams to the state tourney. Between the two schools, Gene became the state of Iowa’s career leader in wins with 1009, which also ranks 10th nationally. He coached girls basketball for 52 years, reaching the state tourney 16 times and sitting at the head of a bench filled with teenage girls 1261 times.

Along the way, Gene was honored numerous times as conference coach of the year and in 1998, he was selected National Girls HS Basketball Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the National HS Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame in 2003 and was also awarded the Morgan Wootten Award in 2011, honoring a career of success in leading high school girls basketball. He is a member of the UIU Hall of Fame and a 50+year Masonic Lodge Member.

Gene, who loved cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, his brother and sister-in-law. He will be missed by his family and grandchildren Taylor (Kelli) Friauf, Lexi Friauf, Kullan and Kameron Klinge, Amron, Bowen and Redek Born; two aunts; an uncle; numerous cousins; nieces and nephews; countless friends and generations of students and players he influenced over the years.

His was a life well lived.
