Walter Edwin Wagner, 63, of Ossian, Iowa died Saturday, December 23, 2017 at his home in Ossian, Iowa. Walter Edwin was born October 28, 1954 to Edwin and Genevieve (Crabtree) Wagner in Decorah, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Decorah Schools. After graduation, Walter joined the police academy.

Walter was united in marriage with Melodie Hall at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa, one daughter was born to this union. They divorced in 1989. Walter was united in marriage with Karen Olszewski on October 3, 1993 at the Ossian Community Center.. He was a Police Officer in Ossian, Iowa for twenty years, retiring in 2000 due to health issues. Walter was a gun enthusiast and enjoyed target shooting, hiking and exploring the area, reading and was an amazing cook and baker. He was a mentor for many and was firm but always fair. His greatest joy was his grandchildren.

Walter is survived by his wife, Karen of Ossian, Iowa; daughter, Heather (Erik) Bettmeng of West Union, Iowa; two grandchildren, Marcus and Paige Bettmeng; nieces, Jenny and Cindi; two nephews, Jamie and Joe; and his sisters, Fran Anderson and Jeneane Cibula.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Genevieve Wagner; and one brother, Carmen Wagner in 2011.

There are no services planned at this time.

Linda Yauslin

Linda L. Yauslin, 70, of West Union, Iowa died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017 at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union. 

Linda Lou, the daughter of Irvin and Lucille (Otters) Holder, was born Feb. 24, 1947 in West Union.  

She was baptized and confirmed at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. 

She attended Holy Name Parochial School and North High School.

Linda was united in marriage with Roger Lee Yauslin on Sept. 12, 1964 at Holy Name Catholic Church. 

She worked at Elsheimer Meat Packing Plant, Anderson Variety Store, and she was a cook at North High School for many years. 

Linda lived in the West Union area her entire life.

Linda was a lifelong member of Holy Name Catholic Church.  

She loved to bake pies, cakes and was well known for her potato salad. She loved to collect clocks and has a few special ones. Some of her hobbies include staining glass and photography. Linda always kept busy at home, baking, cleaning and tinkering with things. She also enjoyed having garage sales with her sister, Norma Cox.

Linda is survived by her husband, Roger, of West Union, Iowa; twin sisters, Darlene Tope and Diane Brink, both of Ames, Iowa; one brother; brother-in-law, Art Cox; and other brothers- and sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Irvin and Lucille Holder; and two sisters, Norma Cox and Arlene Jermeland. 

   A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 2018 at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union, Iowa. Rev. Don Komboh was the celebrant.

Interment was held in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, West Union, Iowa following the burial Mass.

Joan J. Zell, 76, of West Union and formerly of Hawkeye, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018, at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union.

A private family graveside service will be held at Lima Cemetery at a later date.

Joan Joyce, daughter of Joe and Clotildis (Goerend) Noel, was born Nov. 26, 1941 in Minneapolis, Minn.

She attended country school in rural Hawkeye and would later receive her G.E.D. from Northeast Iowa Community College.

Joan was united in marriage with Lloyd Zell in West Union in 1958. To this union four children were born, Deb, Scott, Andy, and Jennifer. The couple would later divorce. 

Joan lived in Hawkeye for most of her life and worked at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union for 30 years retiring on Nov. 3, 2010.

In 2014, she moved to West Union. 

She was a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Hawkeye and most recently was a member of United Methodist Church in West Union.

Joan enjoyed Scrabble, word games, crafting, collecting clowns, but most especially enjoyed spending time with her special friend, Russell Jones. 

Joan is survived by her four children, Deb (Dale) Deuell of Plainfield, Scott Zell of Hawkeye, Andy (Alicia) Zell of Hammond, La., and Jennifer Jensen of West Union; seven grandchildren, C.J. Eggers, Amanda (Stephen) Pfeil, Travis Jensen, Aaron Zell, Austin Zell, Brian Jensen, and Emily Jensen; her mother, Clotildis Noel of West Union; and one brother, Don Noel of St. Paul, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Noel.   2u2

Marie Magdalen Langreck, 97, of St. Lucas, Iowa died Monday, Jan. 1, 2018 at Linn Haven Rehab and Healthcare in New Hampton, Iowa. 

Marie was born April 21, 1920 to John J. and Lena (Mihn) Langreck. She was the second of 13 children.

Marie attended St. Luke’s School in St. Lucas, Iowa through the eighth grade.

Marie worked for families in homecare in the West Union area. After moving back home she cared for her grandmother and then her parents. 

After the death of her parents, Marie farmed with her brother Louie on the farm Southeast of St. Lucas. Marie suffered an injury and moved to Linn Haven, where she lived until her death.

Marie enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and entertaining in her home. 

She was member of the Rosary Society at St. Luke Catholic Church and a longtime member of Catholic Daughters.

Marie is survived by her brothers, Clem Langreck of Lawler, Iowa, Charles (Mildred) Langreck of West Union, Iowa and Jerome Langreck of Lemon Grove, Calif.; sisters, Agatha Busta of Lawler, Iowa, Edna Jirak of Lawler, Iowa, Margaret (Martin) Gossling of Fort Atkinson, Iowa, Virginia Kuhn of Fort Atkinson, Iowa and Lillian Chipera of New Hampton, Iowa; many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews as well as many cousins.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents, John J.  and Lena Langreck; brothers, Henry (Verda) Langreck and Francis (Katherine) Langreck; sister, Beata (Raymond) Schmelzer; sisters-in-law, Bernice Langreck and Eileen Langreck; brothers-in-law, Larry Jirak, Stanley Busta, Paul Chipera and Julian Kuhn; nieces, Mary Jo Schmelzer and Deborah Jean Jirak; nephews, John Langreck, John Chipera and Conrad Langreck; one great-nephew, Lance Langreck; and two great-nieces, Sally Fagel and Allison Brannon.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 8, 2018 at St. Luke Catholic Church, St. Lucas, Iowa. Rev. Daniel Knipper was the Celebrant.

Burial followed at St. Luke Cemetery, St. Lucas, Iowa.

June C. Flaskerud, 82, of Sumner, formerly of West Union, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Chapel in Hawkeye.

Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home preceding the memorial service.

Howard Elton Heath, 78, of Douglas, Ga., formerly of Maynard, Iowa died Tuesday Jan. 2, 2018 at his residence.

A memorial gathering will be held Sunday, Jan. 14, from 2 to 5 pm at Cedar Court Senior Living Apartments at 111 Lilac Ave., West Union.

Howard was born Aug. 20, 1939 in Berrier County, Ga. to Clifton Edward Heath and Rosa Beatrice Fender Heath.

He was united in marriage with Donna Kuhens on Jan. 4, 1978. 

He worked as a custodian at West Central School District for many years. 

He enjoyed working in his garden for Farmers Market in Oelwein, Independence, and West Union. He looked forward to having his grandchildren help with Farmers Market and working in the garden.

He is survived by his Georgia family, two daughters: Lesha Key of Douglas and Brenda Mancil of Pearson, son Gerald Heath of Commerce; two sisters: Linda Hall of Alapaha and Jean Strickland of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers: Thomas and Elwood both of Alapaha; 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by his Iowa family, the love of his life Donna of Maynard; two daughters: Kandi (Ron) DeShaw of Elkader, Keri (Paul) Amos of Hawkeye; seven grandchildren: Derick (Katie) Schroeder of Iowa City, Melanie (Spencer) Bilden of West Union, Ashley Amos of Hawkeye, Blaine Schroeder of Spillville, Brianna (Joe Bergeson) Amos of Waucoma, Cameron Amos of Cedar Falls and Justin DeShaw of Volga; four great-grandchildren Nyle and Peyton Schroeder and Elijah and Emerson Bilden.

He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: William, Clifton and Johnny Heath; two sisters: Melba Ray and Mary Griner; his father- and mother-in-law, Daryl and Geraldine Kuhens.

Gertrude Eleanore Hageman, age 93, of Calmar, IA died Sunday, December 31, 2017, at the Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah.

Gertrude Eleanore (Loesch) Hageman was born June 2, 1924, to Philip and Eleanore (Bouska) Loesch on the family farm west of Spillville. She attended St. Wenceslaus School.  Gertrude married Conrad Hageman on August 20, 1946, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville.  To this union eight children were born and together they farmed east of Calmar.  Gertrude was active in the farming operation; she raised many chickens, preserved produce from her large garden and nurtured many beautiful flowers. Gertrude was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and choir. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, quilting, crocheting, embroidery, coloring, making Christmas ornaments, bingo and especially her family.

Gertrude is survived by eight children: Mary Lou Hageman (Dick Headington) Decorah, IA; Tom (Denise) Hageman, Ossian, IA; Howard (Sandy) Hageman, Elk City, OK; Twins: Linda (Jim) Lukes, Decorah, IA and Lois (Cliff) Holthaus, Decorah, IA; Twins: Sue (Tim) Broderick, Decorah, IA and Sam (Lisa) Hageman, Ft. Atkinson, IA and Roy (Patty) Hageman, Decorah, IA. Twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-six great grandchildren. In laws: Lucy Hageman, Ossian, IA; Rose (Linus) Tupy, Fort Atkinson, IA; Paul (Colleen) Hageman, Decorah, IA Martha (Ed) Mikota, Ossian, IA.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband Conrad March 19, 2006; parents Philip and Eleanore (Bouska) Loesch; Grandchildren: Jonathan Lukes, Jennifer Lukes Murphy, Patrick Kirkland, and Jason Fleshner; Sister: Norma (Al) Kuennen; Father and mother-in-law Joseph and Elizabeth Hageman; In-laws: Arnold Hageman, Catherine (Leo) Ott, Anna (Edward) Ondrashek. Gertrude’s farewell greeting was always Dobrou noc (Good Night) when we tucked her in for the night.   “Dobrou noc”. She had a mass of Christian burial at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 4, 2018. The Clergy was Rev. Robert Gross and Rev. Donald Hawes. The Lector was Jim Lukes. The Eucharistic Ministers were Nancy Roush, Ellen Sauer, and Kay Heying. The mass servers were Ben Hageman, Kinze Shea, and Aidan Holthaus. Offertory gifts, Gertrude’s granddaughters. Casketbearers, Gertrude’s grandsons. Interment at St. Aloysius Catholic Cemetery in Calmar, Iowa. David Omer Davidson, 58, of Saint Lucas, Iowa, formerly of Northwood, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at his home in Saint Lucas.

Visitation will be held at 5 P.M on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at Springfield Lutheran Church in rural Decorah, IA.

A memorial service for Dave will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018, at Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church in rural Glenville, Minn., with Pastor Philip Olson officiating. 

Inurnment will take place in London Deer Creek Valley Cemetery, rural Northwood. 

Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. South, Northwood, is in charge of the arrangements.  

David Omer Davidson was born on Sept. 18, 1959, in Northwood, Iowa, the son of Omer and Juanita (Hanson) Davidson. 

He was baptized and reaffirmed his faith through confirmation in Deer Creek Valley Lutheran Church.

David graduated from Northwood-Kensett High School and attended the University of Iowa.  

Dave had worked as a chef for the White House Supper Club in Saint Lucas for almost 15 years. 

He was a lifelong music lover, having played tuba for the Blue Banners and the University of Iowa Marching Band.  

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Omer and Juanita Davidson of Northwood; daughters Bethany Davidson of Minneapolis, Minn., and Naomi Davidson of Vassar College; his brothers, Bruce (Linda) Davidson of Story City, Iowa, Dean (Julie) Davidson of Omaha, Neb., and Jonathan (Kendra) Davidson of Gretna, Neb.; his sister, Kristin (David Zerkel) Davidson of Athens, Ga.; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends.

Barbara A. Peterson, 62, of Urbana, Iowa (formerly of West Union, Iowa) died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018 at her home in Urbana.  

Barbara Ann, the daughter of Earl and Leona (Fah) Streif, was born June 20, 1955 in Dubuque, Iowa. 

She was baptized and confirmed at Holy Name Catholic Church in West Union. 

She graduated from North High School in 1974.

Barbara was united in marriage with Harold Peterson on May 31, 1975. Two children, Michelle and Dustin, were born to this union. 

Barbara worked at Signode and the P&P gas station in West Union. She was also a homemaker.  

Barb and Harold moved to the Cedar Rapids area 11 years ago.

Barbara enjoyed watching her grandchildren’s sporting events, baking, cooking, and traveling to see her son’s family.

Barbara is survived by her husband, Harold Peterson of Urbana, Iowa; two children, Michelle (Dean) Webster of Urbana, Iowa, and Dustin (Jennifer) Peterson of Murrieta, Calif.; five grandchildren, Cole and Caleb Webster and EmmaLe, Ella and Evan Peterson; her mother, Leona Streif of West Union, Iowa; siblings Mary Trewin of Fredericksburg, Iowa, Duane (Mary) Streif of Elgin, Iowa, Jack (Bonnie) Streif of Whittier, Iowa, Mike (Linda) Streif of West Union, Iowa, Paul Streif of Hudson, Fla., Dale “Buck” (Lynn) Streif of West Union, Iowa, Joyce (Bob) McFarlane of Randalia, Iowa, Kathy (Brian) Beane of Hudson, Fla.; and Gary “Fruity” (Susie) Streif of West Union, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Earl Streif; and siblings Lawrence, Helen, Tommy, and Nancy Streif, Gracie Kamaus, and Diane Thorson.

George Henry William Mueller, 97, of West Union, Iowa died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society in West Union, Iowa.

George was born on Oct. 9, 1920 to William and Lieda (Ahler) Mueller in Farmersburg, Iowa. 

He was baptized on Dec. 19, 1920 at St. John Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, Iowa and confirmed on May 23, 1937 at West Clermont Lutheran Church, Clermont, Iowa. 

George attended country school between Clermont and Elgin through the eighth grade.

George was united in marriage with Vivian Kleppe on May 12, 1948 at First Lutheran Church in Ossian, Iowa. Two children were born to this union.  

George was a Veteran of WWII from 1941 to 1946. He was stationed in Texas, Chicago, Alabama and Alaska. 

George farmed with his father for two years and then continued farming for nine years near the Clermont Clayton County Line Road before moving to West Union in 1960. 

George worked for Big Grain Feed Company for a short time and then at Traeger Grocery for 17 years. George was a Custodian at North Fayette Middle School for nine years and also cleaned for Keystone AEA, retiring in 2001.

George enjoyed playing cards, camping, fishing and feeding squirrels. Above all he loved going dancing with Vivian.

George is survived by a son, Dean (Deb) Mueller of West Union, Iowa; one daughter, Marlene Shea of Jenison, Mich.; a sister, Caroline Wander of Postville, Iowa; two granddaughters, Melonee (Troy) Lentell of Sioux Center, Iowa and Stacy Brewer of Strawberry Point, Iowa; six great-grandchildren, Summer, Ben and Henry Lentell, Tyler Mueller-Lynde and Jaylyn and Cy Brewer.

George was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian on Jan. 11, 2012; his parents, William and Lieda Mueller; a son-in-law; and a brother-in-law, George Wander.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018 at Burnham-Wood- Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, West Union, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Friday.

Funeral Services will be at 10 am on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, West Union, Iowa with Pastor Rusty Phillips as the Officiant.

Burial will be at a later date at West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.

Marian Linderbaum

Marian F. Linderbaum, 90, of Castalia, Iowa, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian, Iowa. 

Marian was born on Feb. 28, 1927, rural Postville, Iowa, to William and Alice (White) Christofferson. 

She graduated from Postville High School and also completed Normal Training during high school for her teaching certification. Following graduation, Marian taught school in the rural Postville, Iowa, area. 

Marian was united in marriage to Charles Linderbaum and two daughters, Sharon and Alice, were born to this union. 

Marian worked alongside Charles on their century farm which they were very proud of. 

She enjoyed crocheting and attending the Nordic Fest Craft Show for over 20 years. Many of the items she made are still being used by numerous people all over the country. 

Marian also enjoyed making hand sewn quilts and made sure all of her family members received one from her as a gift. 

Her greatest joy was her family and visits from the grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the highlights of her life. Marian will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her two daughters, Sharon (Al) Wagner, Fayette and Alice (Jim) Palmer, Castalia; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one on the way; her siblings, Ruth Walz, Walter Christofferson, Myrna Gordon and Mark Christofferson; sisters-in-law, Marie Linderbaum and Marilyn Christofferson; brother-in-law, Lawrence Linderbaum and many nieces and nephews.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents, William and Alice Christofferson; her husband, Charles Linderbaum; her brothers, Roger and Leo Christofferson and grandson, Christopher Lewis. 

  Funeral Services were held on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at 11 am at the Ossian Lutheran Church in Ossian, Iowa, with the Rev. Dave Lenth as the officiant.

Inurnment will be held at a later date.

Gertrude E. Tillman age 89 of Waucoma, IA, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2018, at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waucoma with Rev. Kyle Digmann officiating.

Interment was held in St. Mary's Cemetery, Waucoma, with Alfredo Garcia, Bruce Kleve, Vincent Tillman, Bob Kleve, Anthony Tillman, and Charlie Stammeyer serving as pallbearers. 

Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home in Waucoma was entrusted with arrangements.

Gertrude “Gertie” Elizabeth (Fischbach) Tillman was born on a farm near Alta Vista, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1928. She entered into her eternal rest on Jan. 8, 2018, at Evans Memorial Home, Cresco, Iowa. 

Gertie’s parents were Nicholas and Pauline (Elenz) Fischbach. Gertie’s father died in 1938, so Gertie, along with her siblings and mother, moved to the farm of her grandparents, Matthias and Anna Elenz. 

Gertie attended country school near the Elenz farm and school in North Washington. Gertie quit school in 9th grade to help out on the family farm.

Gertie married Marcellus (Marc) Tillman on June 2, 1948, at Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington, Iowa. 

Marc and Gertie lived in Waucoma, Iowa, from their marriage until 1953. They moved to Greene, Iowa, for three years. They returned to their home in Waucoma. Gertie lived in the same house for 63 years.

Gertie was employed as a babysitter for a few years. Gertie worked for Sara Lee in New Hampton from 1974 until 1990. 

Gertie and Marc enjoyed time at various lakes, taking bus tour trips, taking driving trips, and making two special trips to her father’s village in Germany. Gertie and Marc also liked polka music and dancing. Gertie loved playing various card and board games. Gertie excelled in cooking, baking, and canning. Gertie was talented in embroidery, quilting, and crocheting. Gertie had a special knack for genealogy.

Gertie was a member of St. Mary’s Church of Waucoma and belonged to the Catholic Order of Foresters. Gertie was also a 60-year member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Gertie is survived by two children: Joseph (Claudia) Tillman, Forest City and Mary (DJ) Morris, Waukon. Her grandchildren are: Marissa (Mike) Flugum, Katie (Adam) Krug, Maggie Tillman, Cindy Garcia (special friend Samuel), Donald Spieker, and Ava (Tyler) Cooksley. Gertie had 11 great-grandchildren: Libbie, Emma, and Christian Flugum; Kiera, Brooke, and Dawson Krug; Brittania and Samantha Garcia; Avis, Annie, and Tucker Cooksley. Extended family includes Alfredo Garcia and Stephanie McCumber. 

Gertie is also survived by her brother Nick (Edna) Fischbach; her brothers-in-law: John (late Betty) Tillman, Bob (Cynthia) Tillman, and Merle (Pam) Tillman and her sisters-in-law: Alvera (late Marvin) Kleve and Phyllis (late Don) Massman.

June C. Flaskerud, 82, of Sumner and formerly of West Union, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Chapel in Hawkeye with Lay Servant Mona Christie officiating. 

A Visitation will precede the memorial service on Wednesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. 

Memorials may be made in June’s name to West Union Community Library.

June Corrinea, daughter of Everett and Edith (Simon) Stone, was born July 2, 1935 in Clinton, Iowa. 

She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Faith. 

June received her education in the Clinton Schools and graduated from Lyons High School in 1954. She continued her education at Paris Academy Beauty School, graduating in 1955.

In September of 1955, she was united in marriage with Thomas Flaskerud in Cedar Rapids. To this union two daughters were born, Kristy and Myra. 

The family moved to California after living in Cedar Rapids for a couple years. June worked for many years in California as a beautician prior to retiring in 1997. 

Upon retirement, she moved to West Union and lived there until moving to the Hillcrest Home in Sumner in January of 2017. 

June was an avid reader, enjoyed word puzzles and country western music.

June is survived by her two daughters, Kristy (Rodney) Morse of Fayette and Myra (Robert) Chavez of Walnut Creek, Calif.; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Joe Mateas) Dini of Stockton, Calif., Jason Dini of Walnut Creek, Calif., Ryan (Stephanie) Morse of Fredericksburg, and Alex (Amber Miller) Morse of Fayette; two great-grandchildren, Tanner and Aubrey Morse; two sisters, Lucille Link of Euless, Texas and Charlotte (Robert) Ortiz of Moline, Ill.; one brother, Everett, Jr. (Marlene) Stone of Clinton; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Larry Lamphiear of West Union.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Arleta Murphy; brothers-in-law Donald Murphy and Stanley Link; and one niece, Kathleen Murphy.       3u3

Edwin C. “Ed” Erickson, Jr., 64, of Maynard, Iowa passed away on Saturday morning, January 13, 2018 with his family at his side at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

 

Funeral Service:  10:30 A.M. Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Westgate, Iowa with Rev. Herbert C. Mueller, III., officiating.

Visitation: 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard and for one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Interment: St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery, Westgate, Iowa.

Edwin Clifford Erickson, Jr. was born July 2, 1953 at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein, Iowa the son of Edwin Clifford and Charlotte Erna (Schrader) Erickson.  He was baptized August 9, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church, Oelwein, by the Rev. H. E. Dieter and was confirmed on March 19, 1967 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Maynard, by the Rev. Arnold Thalacker.  On November 4, 1972, Ed was united in marriage to Lois Elaine Gordon at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Westgate, by the Rev. Lloyd Bickel.  Ed and Lois were blessed with a daughter, Laury, and a son, Mykel. 

 

Ed attended and graduated from West Central High School, Maynard, in 1972.  He began working at the Maynard Cooperative (now Viafield) in June 1972 and was still employed by them.  He did several different jobs while employed at the Coop, but mainly was a semi-tractor trailer driver for the majority of his years.  In 1974, Ed was recruited to join the Maynard Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and was proud to still be a member of the department.

 

Ed was so proud of his children and grandchildren.  He loved spending as much time as he could with them and that became one of his favorite things to do.  Ed was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Westgate and the Maynard Fire Department.  He also enjoyed riding around in his 1988 Corvette, keeping his vehicles and semi clean, yardwork, and making people laugh and smile.

 

Ed is survived by his wife: Lois Erickson of Maynard;

Daughter: Laury (Rick) Shonka of Oelwein;

Son: Mykel (Ashley) Erickson of Ely;

4 Grandchildren:  Kaelyn and Kasen Erickson & Lincoln and Madison Shonka;

2 Brothers: Thomas (Judy) Erickson of Independence &

Harry (Diane) Erickson of Elkader;

3 sisters: Caroline (Roger) Frederick of Marion,

Charlene (Robert) Fairchild of Altoona &

Jetty Mae Larson of Decorah;

Brother-in-law: Lyle (Julie) Gordon of Westgate;

2 Sisters-in-law: Cleo Erickson of St. James, Minnesota &

Cathie Gordon of Independence;

and many nieces and nephews who loved their uncle Ed.

Peter J. Greco, 90, of rural Maynard, Iowa died on Tuesday evening, January 9, 2018 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

 

Mass of Christian Burial:  10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein, with Rev. Jerry F. Kopacek officiating.

Visitation:  3:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Friday and from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. on Saturday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Oelwein.

Military Service:  6:00 P.M. on Friday at the funeral home.

Scripture Service:  6:30 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Peter John Greco was born on November 22, 1927 in Oelwein, Iowa the son of Dominic Albert & Mary (Napoli) Greco.  Peter graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Oelwein and then from Upper Iowa University in Fayette with a degree in education.  Peter was united in marriage to Mary Lou Taylor on August 17, 1957 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein.  Peter proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  He taught in Oelwein, worked for the Chicago Great Western & Chicago Northwestern Railroads and farmed at rural Maynard where he had lived for the past 60 years.    

 

Peter was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he sang in the church choir for the past 78 years.  He enjoyed dancing, singing, playing the piano and spending time with family and friends.  He especially enjoyed sharing candy and pocket flashlights to light up the lives of his family and friends.

 

Peter is survived by;

Special Niece: Marguerite Miner;

2 Special Nephews:  Lawrence Greco & Steven Greco and

Many loving Nieces, Nephews & Cousins.

Donna Baldwin Davenport, longtime resident of Iowa City went to be with her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018.  She was 84.  

She was born Dec. 5, 1933 in Strawberry Point Iowa to parents Harry and Lillie (Gruver) Baldwin.

Her father was a bakery owner, well known for his beautiful cakes and special baked goods. Her mother Lillie worked alongside Harry and after his passing went into nursing. 

Donna worked as a crossing guard where her children went to school and was a sweet addition to all the children she helped get safely to school. 

She went on to work at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for well over 40 years until retiring as a Tech II in the operating room. 

But, the single most important "job" in her life was raising her four girls and being a friend to absolutely everyone she came in contact with. She simply loved people. She was always the first to make a phone call, send a card, listen when you needed an ear, and she felt so blessed by the friendship of others.  

She is survived by her daughters Rayma Meyers (Cameron) Donna Murphy (Jeff) Harriette Bell (Jon) Heather Wicks (Brian) and five grandchildren, Jamey (Michelle)  Andrea (Brian) Cody,   Hawkeye,  Austin (Molly) and three great grandchildren, Samantha, Jordyn, and Brynlie.  

Donna was an incredible artist, who loved music, reading, and was hooked on movies, especially those that showed true romance, compassion, and emotions. 

Funeral services will be held at 10am Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City, before she is laid to rest alongside her parents at the beautiful Elgin Iowa cemetery at 3pm. 

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in her memory to the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital c/o University of Iowa Foundation.

Robert “Bob” Friederich, 82, of Postville, Iowa died Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, La Crosse, Wisconsin. Robert Leo was born on January 13, 1935 to Jacob and Ida (Schneider) Friederich in Elgin, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed on March 22, 1953 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. Bob graduated from Postville High School in 1953 and proudly joined the United States Air Force.

Bob was united in marriage with Jean L. Schultz on August 9, 1953. He farmed until 1979 near Frankville, Iowa.  Bob worked in the Street Department and Waterworks for the City of Postville for eighteen years, after retiring in 1997, Bob started working at the Casino Queen (formerly Lady Luck) in Marquette, Iowa as a server.  After Jean’s death on February 2, 2000, Bob met Shirley Manning while attending a grief support group. Together Bob and Shirley built a life together as they healed from the loss of their loved ones.

Bob was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye, Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Cubs Fan. Bob enjoyed working outside gardening, mowing lawns, traveling and going to sporting events.

Bob is survived by his five sons, Allen (LuAnn) Friederich of Luana, Iowa, Chuck (Diana Kokko) Friederich of Waco, Texas, Kevin (Jackie) Friederich of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, Brian (Lova) Friederich, of Des Moines, Iowa and Randy (Joyce) Friederich of Waukee, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Mae Friederich of Portage, Wisconsin; grandchildren; great grandchildren; his siblings, Jim (Delores) Friederich of West Union, Iowa, Ray (Murtis) Friederich of Postville, Iowa and Fern Kleppe of Postville, Iowa; sister-in-law, Betty Loftsgard of Oskaloosa, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.

Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; special friend, Shirley Manning; his parents, Jacob and Ida (Schneider) Friederich; and his eight siblings, Richard Friederich, Dorothy Foels, Erma Kamaus, Alma Berg, Lester Friederich, Jacob Friederich, Jr., George Friederich and Alton Friederich in infancy.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 18, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before services at the church on Friday.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, January 19, 2018 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, Iowa with Rev. Lynn Noel as the Officiant.

Burial will be at 1:30 pm on Friday, January 19, 2018 at the Apostolic Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa.

Arlene Mary McCauley, 86, of Alabama passed away in the evening of Monday, Jan. 15, 2018 in Huntsville, Ala., where she resided in a nursing home. 

She was born near Elma, Iowa on Sept. 6, 1931, the first child of Arthur Fountain and Irene Burri Fountain. 

Arlene grew up around Cresco and West Union. 

She graduated from Cresco High School. 

Arlene married Norman McCauley on May 29, 1957 at Wartburg Chapel in Waverly. 

Arlene then lived in West Union, and when Norman became Fayette County Sheriff, she took on the duties of managing many chores at the Fayette County Jail. 

She led an active life in Northeast Iowa, participating in church activities, and enjoying Bridge Club. She enjoyed traveling during retirement. 

Arlene moved to Huntsville, Ala., in 1998. 

Arlene is survived by a brother, Robert Fountain; her son, Kelly (Christie Swords) McCauley; granddaughters Dale Kristine Rickard, Megan Marie McCauley, and Emma Kathleen Tuttle. She has three great-grandchildren, Lilah Clare Rickard, Sadie Elizabeth Rickard and Caleb Norman Rickard; and former daughter-in-law, Jona McCauley, Hunstville, Ala.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman, and by her sister, Dorothy Fountain Jensen. 

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 at Burnham-Wood-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, West Union. Rev. Adam Starrett was the officiant.

Burial followed at West Union Cemetery, West Union, Iowa.

Donna Marie Seitz, 79, of West Union, Iowa formerly of Clermont, Iowa died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2018 at the Good Samaritan Society, Postville, Iowa. 

Donna Marie was born to Andrew and Julia (Kleppe) Molokken on the family farm in Dover Township, Clermont, Iowa on Sept. 21, 1938. 

She was baptized on Oct. 30, 1938 by Rev. Mona and confirmed on June 29, 1952 by Rev. E.O. Ulring, both at the First Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa. 

Donna spent many years teaching Vacation Bible School and was also Sunday School Superintendent and led Luther League throughout her younger years. Her Church and ancestors of Norwegian heritage meant a lot to Donna, with her children making it five generations attending First Lutheran Church. 

Donna attended Dover #6 country school, which her family still maintains as a historical school and graduated from West Union High School in 1956. 

After high school Donna went to Rath Packing in Waterloo, working in the order writing office.

Donna was united in marriage with Dale R. Seitz on April 20, 1957 at First Lutheran Church by Rev. Vallum. To this union three sons and one daughter were born, Scott, Rodney, David and Jodeen. They resided in Jesup, Iowa for several years and then moved to the Elgin and Clermont area. 

Donna was an Avon and Tupperware Representative while the children were growing up. She then went to work for the Elgin Canning Company, Tony’s and the Lilac Motel. 

In 1981 Donna and her niece Diane Seitz Boltz founded the Valley Flower Boutique in Clermont, Iowa.  After several years Donna purchased Diane’s share and for 15 years she had the job of her life. Flowers were always a big part of Donna life both at work and at home.  She enjoyed visiting with the people who stopped in at the shop, after retiring Donna helped out at the Sweet Repeat Valley Floral Shop. 

After selling her shop she founded Granny’s Tours and enjoyed planning bus trips for the community. 

She belonged to the Farm Bureau Women’s Club, Clermont Community Club, Garden Club, Business and Professional Women’s Club, Fayette County Fair flower supervisor and the Red Hat Ladies of Elgin and Clermont.  

She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, singing and playing her piano. She also loved basketball and was a huge Postville Pirate Fan. Donna loved anything to do with all of her grandchildren. She especially enjoyed doing all the wedding flowers for her grandson’s wedding just this last August. Donna’s wishes came true when she went to Norway and Hawaii and traveled on Amtrak to San Francisco, Hollywood, LA and Niagara Falls.

Donna is survived by her children, Scott (Deb) Seitz, Jodi (Mike) Jacobson, Rod (Malia Fox) Seitz and Dave (Amy) Seitz; grandchildren, Courtney (Aaron) Brinks, Curtis (Kassandra) Seitz, Jessica Seitz, Chad (Sydney) McDonald, Cindi (Todd) Andersen, Melissa (Eric) Brannon, Isaac (Christa) Jacobson, Andrew Jacobson, Evan Jacobson, Owen Jacobson, Mandy (Jessie Riniker) Baker, Eric (Holly) Seitz, Amber Seitz, Ross (Alexandra) Seitz, Josie Seitz, Jackie Seitz and Ciara Keck; great-grandchildren, Annalise and Katelyn Brinks, Kynna, Colton and Calvin McDonald, Jaxson Eden, Caden, Taylor and Abby Andersen, Christian Brannon, Alee and Beau Woodman, Matt and Amber Baker, Emma Seitz and Rubi Seitz; brother, Edwin Molokken; sisters-in-law, Eileen Molokken, Lyla Molokken, Betty Seitz, Shirley Seitz and Edith Seitz; and one brother-in-law, Larry Butikofer.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Dale Seitz; parents, Andrew and Julia Molokken; parents-in-law, Rufus and Sybil Seitz; brothers, Levi (Lydia) Molokken, Arthur Molokken and Melvin Molokken; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Anna Mae (Claude) Moose, Earl Seitz, Leonard Seitz, Louis Seitz, Marlys Seitz, Janice Seitz, Sara Lea Butikofer, Eleanor Molokken and Mabel Molokken; granddaughter Jessica McDonald, nephews, Jack Seitz, Mike Moose and Randy Molokken; niece, Julie Fulsaas; and her beloved dog, Chia.

Funeral Service was held on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Ossian, Iowa with Rev. Marshall Nessa as the officiant.

Burial followed at First Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ossian, Iowa.

Louis 'Stub' Becker

 

 

Louis “Stub” Becker Jr., 77, of Elgin, Iowa died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018 at Gundersen Palmer Lutheran Hospital, West Union, Iowa. 

Louis Jr. was born on May 17, 1940 to Louis F. and Estella (Peters) Becker in Elgin, Iowa. 

He graduated from Valley High in 1958.

Stub was united in marriage with Sharon Kay Schultz on Nov. 5, 1961 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Postville, Iowa and they were lifelong members of United Methodist Church in Elgin, Iowa. The couple had three sons, David, Gary and Dan.

Stub’s first job was at Bob Falb Implement in Elgin, Iowa and took over the family farm in 1961, which he farmed the rest of his life.  He hauled corn for the Elgin Canning Factory for several years and also drove school bus for Valley for a few years. 

Stub was a past member of the Valley Co-Op Board and loved going to the Co-Op for coffee with the guys each morning. Stub was a seasoned mechanic who loved spending time in the shed working on his machinery. He enjoyed visits with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom he loved riding with in his gator, tractors and combine.

Stub is survived by his wife, Sharon Becker of Elgin, Iowa; sons, Dave Becker of Elgin, Iowa, Gary (Sandy) Becker of New Hartford, Iowa and Dan (Tammie Crandall) Becker of Elgin, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, Nate (Ashley) Becker, Niki (Kevin) Oakland, Tyler (Tessa) Becker, Tessa Becker, Drew Becker, Luke Becker, Brooke Becker, Blaine Becker, Elizabeth Becker, Brandon (Kirby Bouillon) Becker and Brittney (Aaron Taylor) Becker; eight great-grandchildren, Kinsley Becker, Kylie, Lexi, Jonathan and Aubrey Oakland, Gannon Becker, Daxton Becker and Adrian Becker; siblings, Alice Schroeder of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mary Lou Downey of Reinbeck, Iowa, Judy (Dave) Larson of Ossian, Iowa; sister-in-law, Mae Becker of Clermont, Iowa.

Stub was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Estella Becker; brother, Charles “Bud” Becker; daughter-in-law, Jackie Becker; and niece, Deanna Spear.

  Funeral Services were held on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2018 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elgin, Iowa with Rev. Hyeunmee Kang as the Officiant.

Burial followed at Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa.
