Royale A. Daniels, 82, of Maynard, Iowa died on Thursday morning, September 29, 2016 at Oelwein Health Care Center in Oelwein.

 

Funeral Service:  10:30 A.M. Monday, October 3, 2016 at the Highland Lutheran Church, rural Elkader, Iowa with Pastor David L. Coffin officiating. 

Visitation:  3:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard and for one hour before the service at the church on Monday.

Interment:  Highland Lutheran Cemetery, rural Elkader, Iowa.

Memorial Fund:  Highland Lutheran Church.

Royale Avis Halverson was born August 20, 1934 in Gunder, Clayton County, Iowa, the daughter of Roy G. & Alvina (Ruroden) Halverson.  She graduated from Elkader High School, Elkader, Iowa, in the Class of 1952.  Royale married James E. Daniels and two children were born to this union, Jari and Brad.  Royale and Jim later divorced.  Royale was a homemaker, Avon lady, ceramics teacher and worked for Rockwell Collins for many years, retiring in 1999.  She was a member of Highland Lutheran Church.  Royale enjoyed traveling, ceramics and visiting with family and friends.

 

Royale is survived by her daughter:  Jari (Dan) Schmitt of Winthrop;

Son: Brad (Mary) Daniels of Randalia;

3 Grandchildren:  Traci Schmitt of Waterloo,

Staci (Andy) Osborn of Winthrop &

Joshua Schmitt of Winthrop;

4 Siblings: Gary (Carolyn) Halverson of Tahlequah, Oklahoma,

Lynn (Vernon) Ames of Marion,

Larry (Kristen) Halverson of Elkader &

Jaynee (Phil) Ruckdashel of Elgin;

Many Nieces & Nephews and lots of friends.

 

Royale was preceded in death by her parents, brother: James R. Halverson and godson: Gary James Halverson.

Anna Butikofer

 

 

Anna Marie Butikofer, 80, of Elgin, Iowa passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Postville, Iowa. 

Anna Marie, the daughter of Azel and Norma Augusta (Warner) Pratt, was born November 1, 1935 at her home near Elkader, Iowa. 

Ann graduated from Central High School in Elkader.  Prior to her marriage, Ann worked as a switchboard operator for the Elkader Telephone Office.  

Ann was united in marriage with Dan Junior Butikofer on February 14, 1955 at Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Elkader.  Four children were born to this union.  

Ann and Dan farmed together and raised their children on a couple of different farms that they rented until 1970.

She worked as a cook at the Airport Inn in Elkader and the Valhalla Supper Club in Clermont. She and Dan both worked at the Elgin Canning Factory and were caretakers of the Elgin Cemetery. Ann also worked for Atwood in West Union, Iowa. 

Ann and Dan moved to an acreage between Elgin and Wadena and did a great amount of gardening.  They enjoyed taking garden produce to the Farmer’s Market in Clermont on Saturday mornings.  

Ann was a member of the Elgin Lutheran Church and WELCA, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Good Neighbors Club.  She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, visiting with family and friends, camping, fishing, cooking, and baking.

Ann is survived by her children, Deborah (Arnold) Guyer, Danice (Terry) Cummings, Kenny (Diane) Butikofer, and Karen (Lee) West, all of Clermont, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren, Ann (Steve) Bushman, Susan (Lowell) Gavle, Teresa Becker, Jeremy Guyer, Jeffrey (Kara) Guyer, Julie (Joshua) Abbott, Tim (Amy) Cummings, Travis (Jessica) Cummings, Jessica (Blake) Hasenmiller, Joshua (Kimberly) Butikofer, and Logan, Lexi, and Lynzee West; twenty-four great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; her sister, Kay (John) Schilling of Colesburg, Iowa; and her sister-in-law, Sharon Pratt of Waukon, Iowa.

Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; her parents; twin brothers that died in infancy; her brother, Ray Pratt; and her brothers and sisters-in-law, Carrie (Fred) Trafelet, Leah (Sam) Schneider, Tillie (Merlin) Hellum, Mabel (Willie) Thorsgaard, Lorraine (Myron) Houg, Ben (Ragna) Butikofer, Elmer (Lydia) Butikofer, and Silas (Patricia) Butikofer.     

Visitation was Wednesday, October 12, 2016 from 4-7 pm at Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Thursday.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Elgin Lutheran Church, Elgin, Iowa with Rev. David Coffin as the Officiant.

Burial will follow at Elgin Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa.

David Martin

David Martin “Sysco Dave” age 68, passed away October 12, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born and raised in West Union, Iowa February 21, 1948, son of Robert and Norma (Cooley) Martin.  

Dave graduated from North High in 1966, February 1968 Dave joined the United States Army. After serving in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in December 1969. 

Dave married Linda Biermann on April 3, 1970 and together raised two children; Shari and Bill.  Dave worked for Sysco Foods until retiring in 2015 due to illness. 

Dave had a great love for his family, friends and customers.  He loved hunting, bass fishing and watching his grandchildren play sports.

Dave is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Shari (Butch Ross), son Bill (Faye Witcraft), mother-in-law Shirley Biermann, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and six sisters; Linda (Duane) Mork, Mary (Wayne) Artman, Bonnie (Kent) Halverson, Pam (Jim) Longtine, Pat (Ron) Paine, Kristi (Kent) Payne, three brothers; Don (Rita) Martin, Reid (Sandy) Martin, Doug (Linda) Martin, one uncle Darold Martin, “stepson” Wade Rickey and many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Phyllis and father-in-law Harlan Biermann. 

-As Dave would say, “Now back to work and go sell something.”

A memorial service for Dave will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, October 21, 2016 at Red Cedar Church, 1701 W. Allen Street, Rice Lake, WI with Pastor Todd Arneson officiating. 

Visitation will be held at Burnham-Ours-Kolstad Family Funeral Home Thursday, October 20 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. and one hour prior to the service at church on Friday. 

Dave will be laid to rest following the service at Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spooner, WI with Military honors present.

Francisca Paris, 73, of West Union, died Friday, Oct. 14, at Gundersen Health System, La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Mass of Christian Burial was held  Monday, Oct. 17, at Holy Name Catholic Church, West Union, with a one hour visitation before Mass at the Church on Monday. Rev. Dale Rausch was  the Celebrant.

Burial followed at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, West Union.

Joanne Piorkowski, 59, of St. Olaf, formerly of Oelwein, died at Scenic Acres, St. Olaf on Sunday, October 16, 2016 of natural causes.

 

Memorial services will be held at 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 21, 2016, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Fayette. Visitation will continue following the service until 8:00 p.m.

 

She was born July 14, 1957 in West Union, IA, the daughter of Henry "Hank" and Marion Seago.  Joanne graduated from North Fayette High School in 1975.  She married Richard Piorkowski on October 27, 2010.

 

Joanne enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, cooking and her lunch outings.

 

She is survived by her husband Richard; brothers: Don Seago, Jim (Robin) Seago, Tom Seago; sisters Connie (Kert) VanGorder, Jamie (Dan) Seago, Teresa (Noah) Froelke and many nieces and nephews.

 

Joanne is preceded by her parents Henry "Hank" and Marion Seago.

Francisca Medina Gallardo Paris, 73, West Union, Iowa, died Friday, October 14, 2016, at Gundersen Lutheran Health Systems, La Crosse, WI.

Francisca was born on March 15, 1943, in Puerto de Santa Maria, Spain, to Francisco Medina Saenz and Maria Gallardo Pinero.

Francisca worked in home health for many years and enjoyed billiards, playing guitar and singing.

She loved her family very much and enjoyed spending time with them. She will be greatly missed by them.

Survivors include her daughter, Stacey Marie (Troy) Zietlow, Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Jonica Paris; her grandchildren, Brittney (Colten) Redig, Aubrey Paris, Kimberly Paris, Andrea Paris, Isabella Maria Zietlow; one great-granddaughter, Madison Rose Redig; four sisters, Milagro, Concepcion, Mercedes and Lucy and numerous nieces and nephews.

Francisca was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Garret Paris; one grandson, Branden Samuel and one brother, Manolo.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 am on Monday, October 17, 2016 at Holy Name Catholic Church, West Union, Iowa with a one hour visitation before Mass at the Church on Monday. Rev. Dale Rausch was the Celebrant.

Jeanne Gulick, 93, died Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton.

Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2016, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton with Rev. Dave Neas officiating.

Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, October 21, at the funeral home.

Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.

Jeanne was born February 21, 1923, in Vinton, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Grace Coates Kephart.

She graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton in 1940.

On February 18, 1942, Jeanne was united in marriage with Wayne Gulick in Vinton.

The couple farmed together near Mt. Auburn, and Jeanne was known for preparing lunch for their hay baling crew.

Jeanne and Wayne also enjoyed mushroom hunting (Jeanne enjoyed the drives) and hunting seashells while wintering in Florida, which they did for 25 years.

Wayne preceded her in death on July 28, 2002.

Jeanne enjoyed garage saling, reading, flowers and her beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. In recent years, in spite of poor eyesight, she still enjoyed her morning newspaper. Above all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Until her stroke/heart attack in January of 2016, she never forgot to send cards for their birthdays, Valentine’s Day, Halloween and other holidays, and they also received a gift from her every Christmas.

Jeanne is survived by two daughters: Kathy (Carlton) Root of Vinton; and Karen (Gary) Halva of West Union; four grandchildren: Jessica Salvo of Scottsdale, AZ; Debbie (Mitch) Madorin of Castle Rock, CO; Brett (Virginia) Root of Vinton; and Jodi (Mike) Geiger of Vinton; and 12 great-grandchildren: Brandan, Mikayla, Cody (Brittany) and Curtis (Jennifer) Geiger, Lindsay and Reed Madorin, Alyssa and Kenidi Root, Danny, Savannah, Tracy and Carrie Halva.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; grandson, Tracy Wayne Halva; granddaughter, Kerry Jeanne Halva-Cash; sister, Margaret “Peg” Long; and brother, Harold Kephart.

A memorial fund has been established.

Lucille Nauholz, 96, of of Sumner, died Monday, October 17, 2016, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

 

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 22, 2016, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Norman Bauer officiating. Burial will follow at Hope Lutheran Cemetery, rural Westgate. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2016 at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church Saturday. Lucille Margaret, daughter of Roy and Viola Day Traeger, was born October 15, 1920, near Sumner, Iowa. She received her education in the Sumner Schools, graduating from Sumner High School in 1938. On February 1, 1944, she was united in marriage with Herbert Nauholz at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Richfield. The couple farmed in the Westgate area prior to moving to a farm near Hawkeye. In 1979, they moved into Hawkeye. Herb’s death occurred in 1996, and in 1998, Lucille moved to Sumner. She had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for many years, and became a member of St. John Lutheran Church when she moved to Sumner. Lucille enjoyed sewing, fishing, was a member of a card club in Sumner, and especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren and other family.

 

Lucille is survived by her children, Bill (Carolyn) Nauholz of Sumner, Judy (Merlin) Meyer of Wright, Minnesota, Diane Pagel, and Brenda (Dave) Rader, all of Sumner; fourteen grandchildren; thirty great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; one brother, Elroy (Betty) Traeger  of Urbandale; two sisters, Marge Prestien of Sumner and Ruth (Bob) Hickman of Sacramento, California; a brother-in-law, Clayton Simpson of Rancho Cucamonga, California; and a sister-in-law, Loretta Nauholz of Fairbank.

 

In addition to her husband and parents, Lucille was preceded in death by a son, Roger Lee; a sister, Frieda Simpson; a brother, John Traeger; and a brother-in-law, Vern Prestien.

Patricia A. Hehr, 68, of Oelwein, Iowa died Thursday morning, October 20, 2016 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa.

 

Funeral Service: 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard, Iowa with Rev. Dennis Frank officiating.

Visitation: 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Monday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard and after 9:30 A.M. Tuesday at the church.

Interment: Long Grove Cemetery, Maynard.

Patricia Ann Patridge was born July 16, 1948 at Oelwein, the daughter of Charles Irving and Doris Bonita (Goodman) Patridge.  In 1966, she graduated from Mason City High School.  She then graduated from North Iowa Area Community College and Upper Iowa University.  On July 16, 1978, she was united in marriage to Erhart Leland Hehr at the First Presbyterian Church in Maynard.  Pat taught for 33 years at West Central Community Schools in Maynard as an elementary teacher and librarian.  She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Maynard, where she was active in teaching Sunday School, council member, congregational president, altar guild member and president of refreshment committee.  She also volunteered with Camp EWALU Holy Folders.  She enjoyed reading, cooking, playing on the computer, traveling and going to music shows.

 

Pat is survived by her husband: Erhart Hehr of Oelwein;

2 sons: Karl (Dee) Hehr of Ames and

Keith (Tanya) Hehr of Des Moines;

4 grandchildren: Matthew, Joseph, Lydia Grace and Mackenzie;

2 brothers: Donald (Connie) Patridge of Davenport and

Paul (Chris) Patridge of Maynard;

1 sister: Katherine (Philip) Hayes of Hopkinsville, Kentucky;

and several nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Harold August Kuntz, 91, of St. Olaf, Iowa died Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at the Elkader Care Center, Elkader, Iowa. Harold was born on February 28, 1925 in Ridgeway, Iowa to Walter F Kuntz and Augusta M (Vatthauer) Kuntz. He grew up an active farm boy on the family farm near Ridgeway. He graduated from Ridgeway High School.

    Harold was united in marriage to Ida Mae Hanson on September 3, 1960 at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa. They farmed the Kuntz family farm for five years before purchasing the Hanson family farm near Gunder in 1965. After farming for many years, he began working in the construction business. He attended some classes at Northeast Iowa Community College to advance his skills as a carpenter and electrician. He ran his own business, Kuntz Carpentry, for many years.

     A devout Christian, Harold was active in the church throughout his life. He served as Sunday School superintendent at the Methodist Church in Ridgeway, and volunteered whenever needed at Marion Lutheran Church and Shepherd of the Hills Ministry in St Olaf.

     After retiring, Ida and Harold enjoyed travel, including memorable trips to Europe and to Alaska. They enjoyed biking on local trails, feeding the birds, and watching the wildlife on the farm. In 2008, they left the farm and moved to Monona, Iowa. At age 83, Harold joined the Monona Carvers, and with their instruction, he became an accomplished wood carver.

     Harold spent his last few months in the Elkader Care Center. He went to sleep peacefully in the Lord on Wednesday, October 19, 2016 attended by Ida, Pastor Hahn and with the loving care of the staff.

     Harold is survived by his wife, Ida; his daughter, Karen and her husband R. Todd Wiblin; his brother-in-law, Loras "Doc" Heck, sister-in-law, Helen Meyer, and many nieces and nephews.

     Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Everett and sister-in-law, Helen Kuntz; brother-in-law, Howard Hanson and sisters-in-law, Maxine Hanson & Evelyn Hanson and brother-in-law, Otto Hanson, Jr. and sister-in-law, Arlene Heck.

 

Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2016, from 3-5 pm at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa. Visitation will also be held one hour before services at the church on Monday.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday, October 24, 2016, at 11 am at Marion Lutheran Church in Gunder, Iowa. The Rev. Marshall Hahn will officiate.

Inurnment will be held in Marion Lutheran Cemetery in Gunder, Iowa, at a later date.

Andrew Frank Hageman, Andy, (43 years old) passed away peacefully in his sleep at home with his wife, Christina Hageman, and brother, Kyle Hageman, by his side; Wednesday evening, October 19, 2016 after a 3.3 year battle with colon cancer. 

 

Visitation will take place from 4:00pm - 7:00pm Monday, October 24, 2016 at  St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church 418 E Main St, Ossian, IA 52161. 

Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00pm Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, with a community luncheon after, in the school gymnasium, at the same address. 

A Celebration of Life Memorial Event will take place on Friday, October 28, 2016 at 6:00pm at the UAW Hall (838) 2615 Washington St, Waterloo, IA 50702. 

Team Andy Big Ass Party will take place at Spicoli's Rockade 3555 University Ave, Waterloo, IA 50701 on November 12, 2016 beginning at 6:00pm and continuing until close.

Andy was the 10th of 11th siblings, born and raised in Ossian, Iowa; the son of Arnold (deceased) and Lucy (Hemesath) Hageman, aged 84 years. He married later in life to Christina (Peverill) Hageman, on June 18, 2015, adding two loved step daughters, Eesa and Riley Jenks. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold Hageman, and his sister, Jackie (Hageman) Mays. 

Andy was born January 16, 1973 in Decorah, Iowa; growing up on the family farm until the age of 8, when they moved into town (Ossian).  He graduated from South Winneshiek High School in 1991. He moved to Waterloo Iowa in 1994, working at Black Hawk Engineering until he was hired at John Deere, in Skilled Trades, in October 1996. Andy valued education and invested in improving his skills his entire life. He attended Hawkeye Community College and University of Northern Iowa, as well as a lifelong personal commitment to continuing education and improvement. His hobbies included smoking meats, golf and time spent with family and friends. 

 

As Andy and Christina Hageman faced the tough decisions and difficult times after his terminal diagnosis, they lived in gratitude for every day. Please don't be sorry Andy is gone. Be grateful he lived life on his own terms; and every day, say out loud in his honor: "I am so grateful that..."

Helen B. Dietzenbach, 89, of St. Lucas, Iowa died Sunday, October 23, 2016 at the Ossian Senior Hospice, Ossian, Iowa.

Helen was born on September 13, 1927 to August and Theresa (Schmitt) Hageman on the family farm near Festina, Iowa.

Helen was united in marriage with Francis Dietzenbach on August 30, 1948 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Calmar, Iowa. Six children were born to this union.

She worked at Atwood Manufacturing and the White House in St. Lucas, Iowa.

Helen enjoyed canning, growing flowers, gardening, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, playing golf and fishing.

She was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters.

Helen is survived by her six children, Levern (Cathy Binner) Dietzenbach of Rochester, Minnesota, Rev. Msgr. John Dietzenbach of Ellicott City, Maryland, Lois (Donald) Dowd of Fredricksburg, Iowa, Luann (Allan) Schmitt of Ossian, Iowa, Mark (Debra) Dietzenbach of Fort Atkinson, Iowa and Glenn (Kristina) Dietzenbach of Des Moines, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Matthew Dietzenbach, Dana Dowd, Derrick (Tricia) Dowd, Sharon (Joseph) Arentz, Christine Dowd, Jenny (Phil) O’Brien, Kristen (Javier) Guzman, Alyssa (Robert) Bullerman, Nathan Dietzenbach, Allison Dietzenbach, Emily Dietzenbach, Nicole Dietzenbach and Jackson Dietzenbach; 10 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Delbert Hageman, Eugene Hageman and Robert (Joann) Hageman and in-laws, Delores Hageman, Joyce Hageman, Urban (Lucy) Dietzenbach, Marie Huber and Louise Dietzenbach.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Francis; parents, August and Theresa Hageman; five brothers, Leonard, Francis, Louis, Augustine and Cornilius; one sister, Marie Brincks; and numerous other family members.

Visitation was on Thursday, October 27, 2016 from 4-7 pm at St. Luke Catholic Church, St. Lucas, Iowa, with a Rosary at 4:00 pm. There was also a one hour Visitation before Mass time at the church on Friday.

June E. Koehler, 96, of Arlington, Iowa died on Monday afternoon, October 24, 2016 at the Good Neighbor Society in Manchester.

Funeral Service: Noon, Friday, October 28, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington with Pastor Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating.

Visitation: 9:00 A.M. to Noon on Friday at the church.

Interment: Taylorsville Cemetery, Arlington.

A Memorial Fund has been established for St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington.

June Elizabeth Koehler was born June 30, 1920 in rural Aurora, Iowa the daughter of Wilfred Freeman and Mary (Maser) Tripp. 

She graduated from Arlington High School with the Class of 1938. 

June was united in marriage to Samuel John Koehler on February 10, 1939 at the Lutheran Church in West Union. 

June was a devoted homemaker and was also employed at the Cottage Inn and Belschner Hardware in Arlington. She was the Arlington Meal Site Manager for 19 years. 

June was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Arlington where she was active as a member of church circle, as a Sunday School teacher, Bible School teacher, chaperoned youth trips and was in charge of the Nursery Cradle Roll. 

She was a member of the Mid Century Club. 

June loved people.  In her free time she enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidering, knitting, reading, puzzles, cooking and making ceramics.  She made ceramic Santas for her daughters, one every year for 16 years.

June is survived by her 2 daughters: LaVon Nelson Amundson of Elgin and Wanda (Kenneth) Chappell of Arlington; 3 grandchildren: Jackie (Dave) Chappell Green, Janet (Mike) Chappell Beer and Tina (Denis) Nelson Monroe; 7 great grandchildren: Elyse Green Rees, Emily (Zach) Green Mutchler, Tina Beer, Ashley Chappell-Jones (Justin Jones), Jeramy (Tami) Monroe, Zachary Monroe and Carly Monroe; and 7 great-great grandchildren: Jayden June Rees, Kenzie Marie Monroe, Holden Monroe, Sutton Elizabeth Jones, Delilah Mae Jones, Haley Mutchler, Maddox Sharpe and 2 Nieces.

 She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Sam on September 3, 2012; grandson: Kurt Chappell; sister: Dorothy Peterman; and 2 sons-in-law: Enoch Nelson, Wayne Amundson; and special friend of the family: Cliff Kuhse.    44u44

Michael Roy Clarkson of Midland, Texas died October 23, 2016 at Midland Memorial Hospital surrounded by friends and family after a hard fought battle with cancer.

Mike was years 61 years young and was diagnosed with cancer in March of 2015.

Mike was born in Genesee, Michigan September 26, 1955, son of Doyle and Juanita Clarkson, who both preceded him in death.

Upon graduating high school, Mike attended the University of Michigan and worked in the family restaurant. Mike also enjoyed a short career in boxing. 

A passion of Mike’s was to master the art of cooking and he attended culinary school prior to moving to Midland in 1981 and secured a job with Permian Distributing, also known as Coors.

On July 5, 1986 he married Janis “JJ” Johnson. 

At the time of Mike’s diagnosis he was employed as a realtor with Keller Williams Realty in Midland, TX.

He loved the Dallas Cowboys, the Michigan Wolverines, cooking, hunting, snowmobiling, the lake, and his family as well as his extended circle of friends that he thought of as family.  He was known as a gentle giant.

Mike is survived by his wife, JJ Clarkson of Midland; sisters, Linda Flowers of Piggott, Arkansas and Lisa Clarkson of Flint, Michigan; father and mother in law, Keith and Darlene Johnson of Elgin, Iowa, sister in law Julie Knox and her husband Mike, brother in law Jim Johnson and his wife Brenda, sister in law Joy Gross and her husband Paul,

Aunt Jean Greenwood and her husband Jack, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, as well as his special four-legged companion Jack.

Mike was preceded in death by his brother, Phil Clarkson.

The celebration of life was held on Monday, October 24, 2016 at the Lewallen Pipkin Garcia Funeral Home.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations to be made to Hospice of Midland and March of Dimes.   44u44

Vernon G. Hartson, 83, of Clermont died Sunday Oct. 30, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Postville.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Clermont Opera House in Clermont. Visitation will be held there from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. with the service to follow at 11 a.m.

Burial will be held at a later date.

Rolland William Lauer passed away quietly on September 8th after suffering a stroke. He was born on May 27, 1930, in Eldorado, Iowa to Harold P. and Evelyn Granger Lauer. Growing up in small-town Iowa, he was active in both music and sports, did farm work from an early age, and helped his father in his farm implement business. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in history from Wartburg College in 1951. From 1952 – 1954 he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Puerto Rico. After leaving the army he earned two more degrees, a bachelor’s degree in music education from Drake University, and a master’s degree in music from the Chicago Conservatory of Music. He became a music teacher in the Chicago suburbs, primarily in Waukegan, where he taught at Jack Benny Junior High School for 28 years. He had a lifelong love of music and was not only a teacher but also a director, performer and listener, attending the Lyric Opera in Chicago for 57 years.

 

In addition to his musical interests, he was active in his church and an avid gardener and photographer.

 

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Paula Schiffler Lauer, a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Patricia Lauer of Cedar Rapids, IA, and two children and their spouses: Jane and Mark Moderhack of Summerville, SC and Kurt and Jennifer Lauer of Wilmette, IL. He was the devoted grandfather of four: Luke Moderhack, Sarah Moderhack, Elsa Lauer, and Greta Lauer. He will be remembered most as a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. 

 

Services were held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 3350 N. Delany Rd., Waukegan, on Saturday, September 17th at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon. The family greeted friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church. Memorials may be sent to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the ELCA Hunger Appeal, or the Wounded Warriors.

Arrangements are under the direction of PETERSON & PATCH FUNERAL HOME 408 N. Sheridan Rd. Waukegan.

Chris Gruver, 45, of Hawkeye, died Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at Unity Point/Allen Hospital in Waterloo.

 

Celebration of life services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Friday, November 4, 2016, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Hawkeye with Rev. Jim Harbaugh officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.

 

Christopher James, son of Terrance and Carol Morf Gruver, was born August 18, 1971, at Waterloo, Iowa. He received his education in the Cedar Falls Schools. Chris was a self-employed tractor mechanic and lived in Hawkeye for several years.

 

He is survived by his father, Terry Gruver of Traer; four daughters, Cassaundra Huwald of Mauston, Wisconsin, Jacqlynne Chizewsky of Tucson, Arizona, and Emma and Caroline Gruver of Hawkeye; one granddaughter, Kalli Small; a brother, Josh Brayton of Sumner; a nephew, Derek Brayton; and his step father, John Kaiserlik of Hawkeye.

 

Chris was preceded in death by his mother, Carol; aunt, Jan Morf; uncle, Jim Morf; and sister-in-law, Heather Brayton.

Scott Alan Berger, 60, of Shorewood, IL and formerly of Waterloo and Denver, IA passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer.

 

Scott was born on December 6, 1955 to Dallas and Patricia Berger.  He graduated from Denver High School in 1974.  As a young man he was an Eagle Scout and often told stories of his outdoor adventures with the scouts. He worked as a Cement Mason and later an Operator Engineer in the Chicago area; retiring in 2011. Scott enjoyed spending time with family, especially with his two grandsons, playing golf, traveling, landscaping (he had a green thumb), and playing with his dog, Dino.

 

Beloved husband of Lois (Collins); loving father of Alex (Naoko) Berger of Schaumburg, IL; Alicia Berger (fiancé Andrew Ogg) of San Diego, CA; devoted son of Dallas Berger of Denver, IA; dear brother of Susan Aegerter of Shorewood, IL; and Ted (Sonja) Berger of Morris, IL; adored papa of August and Max Berger of Schaumburg IL; fun-loving brother-in-law of Arlene (Gregg) Humble of Cedar Falls, IA; Cathy (Allan) Boeckenheuer and Jane (John) Frana of Calmar, IA; uncle and great uncle to many nieces and nephews.

 

Scott was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia (Engel) on October 10, 2016. His grandparents, Walter and Dorothy (Simon) Engel and Louis and Myrtle( Schuler) Berger.  His father-in-law and mother-in-law Robert and Madonna (Lansing) Collins.

 

Visitation Saturday October 29, 9 a.m. until time of Funeral Service 10 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church, Ossian, IA.
