Richard "Nick" Johns
Former area resident Dr. Richard Nicholas “Nick” Johns, 64, of East Haddam, Connecticut, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday evening, December 30, 2015 in the company of his loving family.
Nick was born in Eldora, Iowa on June 26, 1951 to Robert Henry “Bob” and Marjorie Ann Johns.
Nick’s school years were spent in the Reinbeck, Hampton and West Union school districts. He graduated from North High School in West Union in 1969 and received his BS in Sociology from the University of Iowa in 1973. He received his MA degree in Educational Administration from Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State University) in Kirksville, Missouri in 1976. Nick received his Doctor of Education, Educational Leadership (PhD) from the University of Northern Iowa in 1997.
Nick’s educational career spanned 39 years beginning in 1974 as a Behavioral Sciences teacher at Oelwein High School in Iowa. In 1977 he moved to Red Oak, where he became the Associate High School Principal. In 1980 Nick was hired as the High School Principal for the Starmont Community Schools in Strawberry Point, where he later became Superintendent.
In 1989 he moved to Michigan, where he became Superintendent of the Galesburg-Augusta Community Schools and in 1992 the Superintendent of the Gibraltar School District. Nick moved back to Iowa in 1996 as the Superintendent of the Ames Community School District. In 2001 he moved to New York as the Superintendent of the Newburgh School District and in 2004 of the Webutuck Community Schools in Amenia. Lastly, he served as Superintendent of the Liverpool (Syracuse) Central School District from 2009 to 2013, when he retired.
Nick received many academic awards and had numerous professional and community affiliations and publications. Nick’s dedicated work in education touched the lives of thousands of children and inspired hundred of teachers to reflect on and improve their practice.
In his spare time, Nick enjoyed gardening, cooking, wood barbequing, crossword puzzles and DIY television programs. He especially loved to share his passion for baking with his children and grandchildren. His homemade pies, dinner rolls, French fries and chocolate chip cookies were legendary in his family.
Nick grew up fishing from his father’s boat on Clear Lake, the Mississippi River and Leech Lake in Minnesota. Nick always said his dad was his best friend and that he cherished the time they spent together fishing. He carried the love of that sport into his retirement, buying a cabin and fishing off his boat on Bashan Lake in East Haddam.
Nick loved his dogs. Throughout his life, he was never without one or more by his side. God never made a dog Nick didn’t love! In addition, he had a life long fascination with fish aquariums. This hobby began with a ten-gallon tank and a few goldfish in his bedroom and grew into a 200-gallon tank that filled an entire wall in his home.
Nick always enjoyed entertaining visiting guests, be they family or friends. He and Suzy graciously endured the role of ‘NYC tour guides’ on many occasions, organizing site-seeing tours, Broadway shows, shopping and dinners at famous NYC restaurants. Nick’s favorite Broadway show was The Phantom of the Opera, which he saw several times in several different cities.
Nick loved to eat! His love of seafood, especially lobster and shrimp, was well known to everyone who knew him. Road trips with Nick often ended with dinner at a restaurant where fresh seafood was on the menu.
Nick’s words to live by: “If it can’t be fixed with duct tape, it can’t be fixed! Period!” Nick was famous for using miles of duct tape to wrap and ship packages and to repair his moccasins.
