Nona Torson
Nona A. Torson, 89, of Elgin Iowa died Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was born August 3, 1926 to William Young and Anna M. (Gruver) Kerr at home in rural Elgin, Iowa. Nona was baptized and confirmed at Illyria Church, rural Elgin, Iowa. She attended District #3 Country School and graduated from West Union High School in 1943.
Nona was united in marriage to Virgil Torson on August 22, 1943 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. She spent her entire life on the family farm until moving to town in 2001. Nona and Virgil raised their three sons on the farm where she was a devoted farm wife. She also worked at Torkelson Motors in Elgin for twenty-nine years, as a bookkeeper. Nona belonged to Illyria Ladies Aid, What’s Trump Card Club and was a lifetime member of the Illyria Community Church. She loved the outdoors and was a very classy lady and known for her huge Sunday meals with all of her family. Nona was a great noodle maker, buns and cookie all from scratch and memory. In her older years she spent many hours on her tractor mower.
Nona is survived by two sons, Roger (Janice) Torson, of Marion, Iowa and Randy (Kathy) Torson of Elgin, Iowa; six grandchildren, Darin (Meggan) Torson, Ryan Torson, Amber (Greg) White, Becky (Tim) Ruroden, Justin Bartlein and Sam Bartlein; fifteen great-grandchildren and many nieces; nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews.
Nona was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil Torson in 2002; son, Don Torson in 2009; son, Mark in infancy in 1957; her parents; her brothers, Thomas, James, Robert and Clifton “Andy” Kerr and her sisters, Leone Shaffer, Ferne Bennett and June Light.
Visitation will be Sunday, June 12, 2016 from 4-7 pm at Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elgin, Iowa and one hour before services at the church on Monday.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, June 13, 2016 at Illyria Community Church, Elgin, Iowa with Pastor Pam Reinig as the officiant.
Burial will follow at Illyria Cemetery, Elgin, Iowa.
